Eni produces and sells energy products and services to worldwide markets, exploring for, developing, extracting and marketing crude oil and natural gas, and manufacturing and marketing oil-based fuels, chemicals products, gas-fired power and energy products from renewable sources. Its business activities are presented in six operating segments: Exploration & Production, Global Gas & LNG Portfolio and Power, Enilive, Plenitude, Refining and Chemicals, and Corporate and Other activities. Exploration & Production carries out oil and natural gas exploration, field development and production, and LNG operations, in 33 countries, most notably Italy, Libya, Egypt, Norway, the United Kingdom, Angola, Nigeria and the United States. Global Gas & LNG Portfolio and Power supplies and markets gas by pipeline and as LNG on a wholesale basis, markets electricity wholesale and runs international transport activity, and takes in the Power business, which produces power from a fleet of thermoelectric plants located in Italy. Enilive manufactures biofuels at the Italian plants of Venice and Gela and through the Chalmette JV in the USA, and manages a network of service stations in Italy and selected European markets. Plenitude carries out retail marketing of gas, power and related services in Italy and the rest of Europe, and works in renewable energy, building and managing solar photovoltaic and wind installations and a network of charging stations for electric vehicles. Refining and Chemicals refines crude oil to manufacture fuels and, through the wholly owned subsidiary Versalis, produces and markets basic chemical products, plastics and elastomers. The company began as Ente Nazionale Idrocarburi, a public law agency established by law in February 1953, and was transformed into a joint stock company by law decree in 1992, the shareholders resolving in August of that year that it be called Eni SpA.
