SM Energy is an independent energy company engaged in the acquisition, exploration, development and production of oil, gas and NGLs in Texas, Utah, and, following the closing of the Civitas Merger on January 30, 2026, Colorado and New Mexico. As of February 2, 2026, it had 1,241 full-time employees, including former Civitas employees who became SM Energy employees upon the closing of the merger. As of December 31, 2025, before the closing of the Civitas Merger, all of its operations were conducted in the United States in three areas: the Midland Basin, South Texas and the Uinta Basin. Its Midland Basin assets, located in the Permian Basin in West Texas, comprised approximately 98,000 net acres and included its RockStar assets in Howard and Martin counties and its Sweetie Peck assets in Upton and Midland counties. Its South Texas assets comprise approximately 155,000 net acres located in Dimmit and Webb counties, Texas. Its Uinta Basin assets comprise approximately 62,000 net acres located in northeastern Utah. SM Energy was founded in 1908, incorporated in Delaware in 1915, and its initial public offering of common stock was in 1992.
