Southern Company provides electric service to retail customers in three Southeastern states and to wholesale customers in the Southeast through Alabama Power, Georgia Power and Mississippi Power, and distributes natural gas through Southern Company Gas. As of December 31, 2025, the territory had an area of approximately 116,000 square miles and an estimated population of 17 million. The Southern Company system had approximately 29,800 employees on its payroll at December 31, 2025. The traditional electric operating companies are vertically integrated utilities that own generation, transmission, and distribution facilities. Southern Power develops, constructs, acquires, owns and operates power generation assets, including battery energy storage projects, and sells electricity at market-based rates in the wholesale market. Gas distribution operations operates, constructs and maintains approximately 77,900 miles of natural gas pipelines and 14 storage facilities with total capacity of 157 Bcf, and serves approximately 4.4 million customers across Illinois, Georgia, Virginia, and Tennessee. Southern Nuclear operates and provides services to the Southern Company system's nuclear power plants. Southern Linc provides digital wireless communications for Southern Company and its subsidiary companies and also markets these services to the public, over a system covering approximately 122,000 square miles in the Southeast.
