Its 403(b) tax-qualified annuities are purchased by individuals employed by public school systems or other tax-exempt organizations through employee benefit plans of those entities. At December 31, 2025, it had 275,183 total supplemental policies in force and 874,556 total group covered lives. Its business began in Springfield, Illinois, in 1945, when two school teachers saw a need to provide automobile insurance to their association members; the company, originally named Illinois Education Association, later became Horace Mann Educators Corporation.
