In brief

What this company does

Eli Lilly and Company discovers, develops, manufactures and markets products in a single business segment, human pharmaceutical products. It manufactures and distributes its products through facilities in the United States, including Puerto Rico, and in Europe and Asia. Its products are sold in approximately 90 countries. At the end of 2025, it employed approximately 50,000 people, including approximately 27,000 outside the U.S., with approximately 12,000 engaged in research and development activities. Internal pharmaceutical research focuses primarily on the areas of cardiometabolic health, immunology, neuroscience and oncology. In the U.S., most of its products are distributed through wholesalers, and in 2025, 2024 and 2023 three wholesale distributors, McKesson Corporation, Cencora, Inc. and Cardinal Health, Inc., each accounted for a significant percentage of consolidated revenue. It was incorporated in 1901 in Indiana to succeed to the drug manufacturing business founded in Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1876 by Colonel Eli Lilly.
