In brief

What this company does

It purchases single-family and multifamily residential mortgage loans originated by lenders and, in most instances, packages them into guaranteed mortgage-related securities that are sold in the global capital markets, transferring interest-rate and liquidity risks to third-party investors. It does not originate mortgage loans or lend money directly to mortgage borrowers. It also transfers a portion of its mortgage credit risk exposure to third-party investors through credit risk transfer programs that include securities- and insurance-based offerings. In 2025, it provided $465 billion in liquidity to the mortgage market, enabling the financing of 1.7 million home purchases, refinancings, and rental units. At January 31, 2026, it had 7,334 full-time and 21 part-time employees, the majority of them in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. It has two reportable segments, Single-Family and Multifamily. Freddie Mac is a government-sponsored enterprise chartered by Congress in 1970. Since September 2008, it has been operating in conservatorship, with the Federal Housing Finance Agency as its Conservator.
