Its Benefits and Protection segment protects businesses and their employees through employee benefits, business owner and disability solutions, and life and disability insurance for business owners, and is organized into two divisions, Specialty Benefits and Life Insurance. As of December 31, 2025, it employed approximately 19,700 people across the globe, including approximately 11,600 in the U.S. and 8,100 outside the U.S. The Benefits and Protection segment's activities date back to 1879, when Principal Financial Group first began selling individual life insurance products.
