What this company does

Vale S.A. operates three systems in Brazil for the production and distribution of iron ore: the Northern System, the Southeastern System and the Southern System. Its business is organized into two operating segments, Iron Ore Solutions and Vale Base Metals. The Iron Ore Solutions segment comprises the extraction of iron ore and the production of pellets and briquettes, as well as large-scale logistics systems and distribution centers integrated with its mining operations, including railways, maritime terminals and ports. For those products it runs eight pelletizing plants in Brazil, two more in Oman for pellet production, and two briquette plants in Brazil. The Vale Base Metals segment is operated by the subsidiary Vale Base Metals Limited and its subsidiaries, and comprises the production of nickel, copper and their respective by-products. Nickel operations are conducted mainly by Vale Canada Limited, which operates mines and processing plants in Canada and Brazil, as well as nickel refining facilities in the United Kingdom and Japan. In Brazil the company produces copper concentrates at Sossego and Salobo, in Carajás in the state of Pará, and in Canada it produces copper concentrates and cathodes associated with nickel operations in Sudbury and Voisey’s Bay.
